DOOM: The Dark Ages Features Several New and Terrifying Demons

DOOM has never been shy about its monstrous cast. From the iconic Imp to the towering Cyberdemon, the series’ bestiary is a cornerstone of its vicious appeal. With DOOM: The Dark Ages, id Software balances a fresh onslaught of hellspawn while expanding the demonic pantheon with creatures that are visually terrifying and strategically compelling in combat. After dozens of hours spent within its confines, let me take you through a handful of new enemy types that best represent what The Dark Ages is all about.

Komodo

One of the most striking additions to DOOM’s demonic ranks is the Komodo. Despite their size, the Komodo is fiercely agile and will make the player pay for their mistakes with ruthless chain-combos. If you have any chance of besting a Komodo, you must rely on precise parries to deal with its melee assaults. Though parrying won’t ensure your victory–the Komodo also uses a shoulder-mounted turret that will shred players to pieces if they don’t keep their feet moving.

Your shield saw will help provide brief openings to retaliate. Bring the heavy artillery along for the ride, and don’t forget to avoid the Komodo’s razor-sharp, chainsaw-esque sword, lest ye be turned into dragon food.

Pinky Rider

Among the returning horrors is the Pinky, a hulking, demonic boar-like creature known for its aggressive charges and thick hide. However, in The Dark Ages, the Pinky undergoes a horrifying evolution, becoming the “Pinky Rider” – a testament to id Software’s commitment to escalating violence and incorporating a medieval aesthetic.

Unlike the classic Pinky, which relied solely on its brute force, the Pinky Rider represents a twisted symbiosis. It isn’t just a monster; it’s a war machine. On its back sits a heavily armored, seemingly deadite-possessed knight, wielding crude weaponry and amplifying the Pinky’s already formidable threat. This rider isn’t there for mere aesthetic flair; it’s an integral part of the enemy’s combat strategy.

Be sure to dispatch the rider as quickly as you can. I’ve found a well-placed Impaler shot to do wonders here. Doing so will make your life much easier, as you’ll no longer need to worry about its ranged attacks. Just be sure to prepare for what comes after the rider’s death, as the Pinky never takes too kindly to losing its master.

Cyclops Titan

As their name suggests, these suckers are big. Like, really big. The Cyclops Titan embodies the raw power and overwhelming threat that define the DOOM experience. But beyond its physical attributes, the Cyclops Titan plays a significant role in establishing the tone and narrative of DOOM: The Dark Ages. Its presence highlights Hell’s forces’ sheer scale and destructive potential during this era. It underscores the desperation and brutality of the conflict, where humanity faces overwhelming odds against a seemingly unstoppable tide of demonic monstrosities. The Cyclops Titan is not simply a powerful enemy but a symbol of the impending doom that threatens to engulf the world.

Rest assured, however, that The Dark Ages doesn’t shy away from providing everything you’ll need to take these goliaths down. I won’t spoil it, but the first encounter with a Cyclops Titan is unforgettable.

Agaddon Hunter

The Agaddon Hunter appears as a hulking figure clad in thick, blackened plate armor. This armor isn’t the polished steel of noble knights, but rather a brutal, almost corrupted carapace, suggesting its crafting involves demonic materials or influence. Its morbid and menacing helmet further amplifies the sense of dread and anonymity, making it clear this is an enemy driven by pure, unadulterated aggression.

It also uses an impenetrable shield that is seldom forgotten and tough to handle. As intimidating as they may be, the best way to approach the Agaddon Hunter is to get up close and personal. Closing distance will force the Agaddon to drop its shield and attempt a series of melee attacks. Parrying these will leave them open for considerable damage, but be warned, if you miss your parry, it’s gonna hurt. Bad.

Thank you for keeping it locked on COGconnected.
