The Good and The Bad

The Positives and Negatives of the Switch 2 Launch Lineup

Since Nintendo revealed its hand, the gaming world has been alight with speculation and excitement surrounding the Switch 2. Expectations were sky-high; some fans were thrilled by the major reveals, while others were left underwhelmed by certain aspects. With the launch lineup poised to play a crucial role in the console’s success, it’s time to break down what’s working, what’s not, and what it all means for Nintendo’s next chapter.

The Good

Going Big with Mario Kart World

Leading the pack is Nintendo’s flagship racer, Mario Kart World. Taking a bold turn for the franchise, this entry introduces open-world elements and seamless transitions between races, shifting the series into high gear. With double the number of racers on the track and a fresh sense of momentum, Mario Kart World looks set to hit all the right checkpoints, placing it in pole position to headline the Switch 2’s launch lineup.

Third-Party Support

An issue that hindered the original Switch was the lack of third-party support. Many games just bypassed the hybrid console, which frustrated enthusiasts. Nintendo obviously had this in mind with the Direct, focusing on blockbuster titles making their way to the Switch 2. With Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition and Hogwarts Legacy available at launch, this showcases a much-needed strong third-party backing.

Enhanced Titles

The question surrounding enhanced Switch titles was truly answered in the reveal. Games like Mario Party Jamboree are getting a significant paid-for update, using the Camera as a tool to converse and for Eye Toy-style minigames. Enhanced versions of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are also available at launch and are free for players with the NSO + Expansion Pack. This offering is perfect to showcase the power of the console and allows gamers to revisit a classic while waiting for future releases.

Legacy Support

Nintendo’s commitment to celebrating its legacy has been well-received by gamers. With the NSO + Expansion pack, players can revisit titles from the SNES, Gameboy and much more, but there’s been a cube-shaped hole in the catalogue for years. Finally, the Japanese giants are about to fill that gap with the GameCube online library. With iconic releases like The Wind Waker, Soul Calibur 2 and F-Zero GX available at launch, there’s plenty to play when you pick up the console.

The Bad

Lack of Single-player Titles

Although the new Donkey Kong game looks incredible, why is it not available at launch? It’s clear that Nintendo wants to ensure the success of Mario Kart World and get players excited for DK, but at least one strong single-player title should be in the launch lineup. As it is, those gamers will have to hope for a strong campaign in Mario Kart World or just settle for a port until DK swings in.

Sparse Indie Presence

The original Switch was a true indie machine. With fewer major titles, a spotlight was shone on smaller developers making the platform the go-to for indie releases. Although we got to see Enter the Gungeon 2, it would have been nice to have seen more, emphasising the commitment to indie gaming.

Port Fatigue

Okay, I know I’ve just mentioned that it’s good to see third-party support, but I don’t want another console full of ports. Yeah, in one hand, it’s good to see Cyberpunk make its way to the Switch, but is it really necessary? The lineup is sorely missing exclusives, we don’t need more ports.

Lack of Surprises

The lineup for the Switch 2 is solid, although a little predictable. We knew Mario Kart was on its way and rather than topping this with something else, they played it safe. Focusing on new IPs rather than remasters would have shown why this is the console you need, however, Nintendo played it too safe.

Final Thoughts

The Nintendo Switch 2’s launch lineup offers a mix of beloved franchises and enhanced classics, aiming to appeal to both longtime fans and new players. While it covers a broad spectrum of genres and includes some highly anticipated titles, the absence of certain flagship series and a limited indie presence may give some potential buyers pause. Are these offerings compelling enough to make you an early adopter, or will you wait to see how the library evolves in the coming months?
