Five Weapons That Annihilate Demons in DOOM: The Dark Ages
Doom Slayers unite! DOOM: The Dark Ages has officially launched, and it is glorious. I’ve spent twenty hours over the last several days ripping and tearing my way through hordes of merciless demons on The Dark Ages’ “Nightmare” difficulty. Nightmare can be ruthless, so take my hand and let me offer some advice on what I’ve found to be most effective against the nastiest things DOOM: The Dark Ages will throw at you.
5. Shield Saw
Thankfully, one of The Dark Ages’ best offensive choices comes in the form of its most defensive weapon. The shield (which quickly becomes the shield saw) is used to block and parry attacks that you’d otherwise have no hope of surviving without. In addition, it can be thrown great distances to manage hordes without getting up close and personal. Once you add a ring of chainsaw-esque blades, it becomes invaluable in keeping fodder/shielded demons in check, and larger demons from overwhelming you. Many weapons offer upgrades that synergize with the shield, such as the shotgun, which can add a burn effect to a demon when the shield is embedded in their flesh.
4. Impaler
Who doesn’t want to smoke some big, ugly monstrosity in the forehead with a railroad spike? I sure do. So the Impaler became one of my favorite weapons almost immediately upon discovering it. It doesn’t just look and sound cool, though. It’s a powerful weapon that can make short work of many formidable foes, thanks to a massive increase in damage when you land a headshot. It doesn’t hold many rounds, but its sheer power makes up for that. With an upgrade or two, it also becomes much easier to replenish its ammo. The Impaler is one part sniper rifle, one part crossbow, and 47 parts badass. Don’t sleep on it.
3. Cycler
If you’re into chaining damage from one enemy to another, the Cycler is for you. It utilizes electricity to arc between enemies, often freezing them in place as they’re electrocuted. In a game like DOOM, when you’re routinely faced with seemingly insurmountable odds, it’s never a bad idea to halt a group of baddies in their tracks so you can create distance and regroup. The Cycler excels in this. Its damage output is nothing to sneeze at either. I’ve found its DPS perfectly effective, in nearly every situation, whether against a dozen enemies or a one-on-one boss fight.
2. Super Shotgun
This fear-inducing spin on the regular shotgun should be a staple in your arsenal from the second you find it. It has a slower rate of fire and smaller clip sizes than its counterpart, but it makes up for it in spades with its power. It will utterly dominate the majority of enemies with a single shot, and is perfectly capable of taking down any boss you come across. Be sure to snag the upgrade that reduces time between shots, and you’ll become a believer in the Super Shotgun as quickly as I did. Seriously, this thing rocks.
1. Chainshot
The Chainshot has been my go-to ever since discovering it in chapter six. It packs a ridiculous amount of power, looks fantastic, and can deal with literally everything The Dark Ages will throw at you. It’s essentially a ball-and-chain stuffed into a shotgun. Holding the fire button empowers it, and upon release, it launches forward with an utterly devastating force. It breaks shields. It causes explosions. It delivers an ungodly amount of damage. And, most importantly, it leaves demons in one of two states: either they’ll wind up a puddle of chunks, or pissing themselves after seeing their friends turned into said puddle of chunks. I can’t get enough of the Chainshot, and there’s nothing I’d rather have with me when the going gets tough.
