One advantage of choosing print over TV news some 40 years ago, because I wanted more than 30-to 90-second sensationalized sound bites, is an improved recall of current and historical events. When Mr. Carney introduced his Soviet-style rental housing plan, strong feelings of deja vu ensued. It stank of the recent Trudeau waste of $8 billion, of course, but it was the reference to MURBs that scared me. Google ‘Problems with MURBs’ and you will see why. Guess economists don’t need history.

J.T. Morse

(Yes they do.)

Double standard

Hold on a minute. Why is it OK for Doug Ford to call Howard Lutnick about tariffs but Danielle Smith is tarred and feathered for meeting with U.S. conservatives?

Bill Crawford

(Good point.)

Body type debate

In your letters section on April 3, John Hancock describes Mark Carney as having the body of an endomorph. This is incorrect, as his body type better fits that of an ectomorph, tending a bit towards mesomorph.

(But are his policies a good fit for Canada?)

Wake up, Canada

For the past two weeks Mark Carney is speaking words that Pierre Poilievre has been saying for the past two years. Remember the party that brought this country to immense discomfort … and don’t forget the party that propped it up to do it! Shuffle the same Liberal cabinet members … equals the same, just with a different sales pitch. Wake up, Canada, or we’re in for the same insanity we’ve endured far too long. Please vote wisely.

Harold Then

(For far too long indeed.)

Dangerous fantasy

A person could be forgiven for believing that the clock has been set back 40 years, and that we are now living in George Orwell’s 1984. Most Western leaders still refuse to accept that three years of sanctions, arms and money for Ukraine has failed to weaken Russia. Instead, they cling to the dangerous fantasy that Ukraine can defeat its much larger adversary, if only Western armies will enter the arena directly; an insane proposal that amounts to nothing less that WW3. Every day that a peace settlement in Ukraine is postponed, hundreds more needlessly lose their lives, yet our leaders remain enslaved by their witless imaginings of an imperialist Russia intent on conquering Europe. As they chant their mantra, “Ignorance is strength. War is peace.”

Mike Ward

(It’s a troubling situation.)
