Letters to Editor, March 25, 2025: ‘Christmas memories hard to beat’

Article content

I had magical Christmases as a child. One of my most cherished memories was seeing the big department stores in downtown Calgary in the mid-1970s. Walking in never disappointed, as they decorated everything spectacularly like a Disney movie of years gone by. There was no CTrain and my aunt would take me downtown from Renfrew by bus, and, if she had money left over, a cab back filled with gifts. Times change, indeed, and I am sad for today’s youth to have missed the magic years of Christmas and the best years to be growing up in Calgary. Memories of the Eaton Centre and the Bay building decorated for Christmas are forever cherished by many.

(It is, indeed, unfortunate today’s youth won’t get to experience something like that. Families will have to get creative in making new memories.)

Trump’s ruse

Trump “backing the weaker leader” is just a ruse. Trump knows his endorsement is political poison in Canada. By claiming he wants Mark Carney to win, Trump is actually hoping to scupper Carney’s chances. In reality, Trump would be much happier with a right-wing divisive government in charge of Canada because he thrives on chaos. It is much easier to take over a country that is fighting among themselves. A polarizing person who hates immigrants, the poor and vaccines would definitely be Trump’s true soulmate.

(You’re suggesting our current left-wing government hasn’t been divisive?)

Do not fall for Libs’ act again

So, once again, Canadian voters are tempted to vote Liberal. Just like Wile E. Coyote, they will fall for the same old Liberal tactics, including being bribed with their own money. Never mind that the whole Liberal Party, not just Trudeau, is complicit in bringing Canada to its knees with its destructive and woke policies. They will promise you that, this time, things will be different. Sadly, a lifeline has been thrown their way in the form of tariffs from our southern neighbour, giving them the opportunity to change the narrative of this election away from fixing the damage they have done to battling tariffs, which we know are nothing more than a bargaining chip being used to achieve other goals. People that vote for Mark “Carnage” will deserve all the bad things coming their way. But, what of the rest of us?

RICK MAILLOUX

(This is a consequential election — it’s time for a change from the reckless policies of the Liberals for the last near-decade)
